Hi everyone, it’s Emily again from New Zealand and I am honoured to be doing another guest review for Ellen on TeenRunner! You may remember me from the review I did with Ellen on sports watches but this time I am doing a review on Fresh As products.
My baking and smoothies have been getting a makeover thanks to the freeze dried fruit from Fresh As!
Disclaimer: I was sent packets of Fresh As to sample – however all opinions are entirely my own!
What are Fresh As products?
Fresh As products are whole or sliced freeze dried fruit that come in packets and last a lot longer than your regular fresh fruit! Fresh As do whole, slice and powdered freeze dried fruit as well as herbs but this review will be on the freeze dried fruit. Most of the freeze dried packets contain 100% dried fruit apart from mandarin and lychee which also contain sugar and the lychee has citric acid as well.
Taste and Appearance
At first it is hard to get used to eating freeze dried fruit in comparison to fresh fruit as it is so small and a weird texture but don’t let that put you off them as they are packed full of flavour!
My favourite freeze dried fruit has to be raspberries as they look exactly like a fresh raspberries, and are bursting with an intense raspberry flavour, which is not too overpowering due to the small size of the freeze dried fruit.
The pineapple freeze dried fruit is sweet and crunchy and has a great flavour as well. It also smells like fresh pineapple!
You need to like feijoas to like this freeze dried fruit as it has a strong feijoa flavour. Although it has a funny texture and looks like polystyrene it tastes just as fresh as the fresh fruit!
The freeze dried plum has a vibrant red/purple colour and is slightly tart but still delicious anyway to those who can cope with the slight sourness.
The cherries have a real hit of flavour with a bit of a tang.
To be honest I wasn’t very keen to try lychee because the actual fruit looks unusual! The lychees are reasonably large and apparently have a lychee taste (I have never tried a lychee before). For someone who is put off by the look of the fresh lychees I found these quite tasty and sweet!
And finally the freeze dried mandarin segments are the fruits I liked the least. I like mandarins but found these quite sticky and sweet with the added sugar. Despite this, there is an underlying mandarin taste, which is nice.
The individual flavours of the freeze-dried fruit are definitely very specific to your taste since for example if you don’t like cherries you probably won’t like freeze-dried cherries as the taste of one freeze-dried cherry is like the equivalent of eating 5 fresh at the same time. However if you love cherries, I would definitely recommend trying these out especially when cherries aren’t in season at your local farmers market!
What to use Fresh As products for
Freeze dried fruit are great when fresh fruit is out of season especially in the winter months or as a healthy and lazy snack when you get hungry! I am really surprised how long the packets have lasted, as you don’t need to use many at a time, which is great. I usually have the freeze dried fruit mixed into something or as a topping and find that because the flavour is so concentrated it is hard to eat just by itself!
I’ve used the freeze-dried slices or whole fruit on cereal, baking, dipped in chocolate, crumbled over ice-cream or a dessert and to decorate my smoothie bowls to make them look nearly Pinterest worthy ☺.
I also received freeze dried fruit powders. The flavours included strawberry, blueberry, blackcurrant, passionfruit, mango, raspberry and plum. I have used the powder in ice-blocks, smoothies, baking, to flavour plain yoghurt or as a decoration on baking or my oats in the morning. These packets last a long time due to the intensity in flavour as just a small amount goes a long way!
You can purchase Fresh As products from retailers in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, United States and more!

Overall, the Fresh As products are definitely something I want in the cupboard which I can add to baking or smoothies to add some flavour and colour or to come in handy when I have no particular type of fresh or frozen fruit for a recipe in the house!
I would just like to say a huge thank you to Emily for taking the time to write this great review on a product that I have never actually tried myself. Definitely something to try in the future!
As a quick side note, I’ve just added 2 new workouts to the workout page. These are gym lower body sessions that allow you to choose your own weights to use within the supersets. When attending strength sessions at school, the coach devises sessions with very similar structure so I thought I would share two example workouts with you (okay I’m basically stealing them but it’s all for a good cause!).
