Okay I may have recently found my new favourite drink. Coco Pro Coconut Water. Pineapple flavour.
Coconut water is definitely an acquired taste- you either love it or you hate it (I would say ‘just like marmite’ but I really can’t stand that saying!). As you have probably guessed, I’m a fan and if you are too, I’m pretty sure you’ll love Coco Pro. However if you’re a hater, there’s a high chance that you won’t because at the end of the day, although this drink has extra protein, electrolytes, you name it… it’s still coconut water!
There are two varieties, one with a hint of pineapple, and one just plain. Here’s what I think.
I tried the plain one first, and to be completely honest with you I was a little disappointed…I mean, I just didn’t think it tasted very much like coconut water. It has this slightly sweet addition, and for some reason it just didn’t work for me.
However, I then went on to try the bottle with a hint of pineapple after my swim, and I really did love it. The pineapple-coconut balance is perfect, and also a great way to ease yourself into drinking pure coconut water. I will definitely be getting this flavour again!
This is where these bottles really step above the other drinks on the market. Firstly, they’re loaded with 20g of protein from whey protein isolate (the fastest absorbing source of protein available) meaning they are great for recovery- I’ve found that the perfect time to drink them is after a spin or hard workout.
As well as containing 100% of your recommended daily vitamin C intake (always a good thing!), CoCo Pro drinks have no added sugar and an extremely high electrolyte profile for rapid replenishment and recovery. You can read loads about all the science-y bits here but I’ll do a quick summary. So electrolytes are the minerals that control water balance in the body, and add to your overall health (basically, they’re very good things if in balance). For athletes, the most obvious symptom of electrolyte imbalance is muscle cramping, but you might also experience dizziness. The bottles provide you with LOADS of these dietary gems- to name a few we have potassium and sodium. Calcium is particularly important for me at the moment for bone health!
Is it worth it?
Right so these are going to cost you £17.99 for 8 bottles from the Drink Coco Pro shop, but they’re also sold in shops such as Waitrose and Wholefoods. Personally, I think these drinks are worth it, but I tend not to buy things in bulk- I’m much more likely to pop into Holland and Barret on the way home from the gym and pick one up for £2.79. Now that might seem like quite a lot for a soft drink, but if you think about it, with the amount of protein included you’d be paying about the same amount for a recovery bar of similar nutritional value.
So I recommend you give these drinks a try! If anything, the packaging is fab and I love the vibe that’s coming from their Instagram and website!
Disclaimer: I was sent two bottles to try- however all my opinions are completely honest.
